Use the chart below to help you determine when you and/or your loved one can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx.

Your Situation

Your Options

You are not currently eligible for Medicare (not entitled to Medicare benefits under Part A and/or enrolled in Part B).

You can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx once you become eligible to enroll in Medicare. (Please refer to Enrollment Periods & Penalties.)

You have Traditional Medicare.

You can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx.

You have Traditional Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan (Plans A through G).

You can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx.

You have Traditional Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan that includes drugs (H, I, or J or an older plan).

You can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx or you can keep your existing drug coverage. You cannot enroll in both since you can only belong to one prescription drug plan at a time.

You have a Medicare Advantage Plan (for example, a Medicare HMO).

If you get prescription drug benefits from your Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, you cannot enroll in Medicare Blue Rx. You cannot have a Medicare Advantage plan and a prescription drug plan at the same time.

However, if you are a member of a Private-Fee-for-Service MA Plan (PFFS) that does not provide drug coverage, you can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx.

You have drug coverage from your employer.

You may be able to enroll in Medicare Blue Rx depending on if the plan offered by your employer/union meets or exceeds Medicare Prescription Drug Plan standard benefits (also known as creditable coverage). Please contact your group administrator for more information.

You have Medicaid or coverage from a state pharmacy assistance program.

You can enroll in Medicare Blue Rx now. Find out if you qualify for extra help with monthly premiums and copayments.

Or, if you do nothing, you may be randomly assigned to a Medicare-Approved Prescription Drug Plan, instead of selecting the plan that you want. However, you can change plans at any time if you have Medicaid coverage.
