Eligibility
To be eligible for Blue MedicareRx, you must:
- be entitled to Medicare benefits under Part A and/or enrolled in Part B;
- reside in Texas; and
- not be enrolled in any other Medicare Part D Plan while enrolled in Blue MedicareRx.
Please note: If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, you should review the following scenarios carefully:
- You may not enroll in any Medicare-approved prescription drug plan unless you have a Medical Services Account (MSA) or a Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Medicare Advantage Plan that does not provide Medicare prescription drug coverage.
- If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, or POS plan, you may only receive your Medicare Prescription drug benefits through that MA plan.
- If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, or POS plan, or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan, and then enroll in an independent Medicare-approved prescription drug plan, you will automatically be disenrolled from your Medicare Advantage plan or the other prescription drug plan.
Use the chart below to help you determine when you and/or your loved one can enroll in Blue MedicareRx.

You are not currently eligible for Medicare (not entitled to Medicare benefits under Part A and/or enrolled in Part B). |
You can enroll in Blue MedicareRx once you become eligible to enroll in Medicare. (Please refer to Enrollment Periods & Penalties.) |
|
You have Traditional Medicare. |
You can enroll in Blue MedicareRx. |
|
You have Traditional Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan (Plans A through G). |
You can enroll in Blue MedicareRx. |
|
You have Traditional Medicare and a Medicare Supplement Plan that includes drugs (H, I, or J or an older plan). |
You can enroll in Blue MedicareRx or you can keep your existing drug coverage. You cannot enroll in both since you can only belong to one prescription drug plan at a time. |
|
You have a Medicare Advantage Plan (for example, a Medicare HMO). |
If you get prescription drug benefits from your Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, you cannot enroll in Blue MedicareRx. You cannot have a Medicare Advantage plan and a prescription drug plan at the same time. However, if you are a member of a Private-Fee-for-Service MA Plan (PFFS) that does not provide drug coverage, you can enroll in Blue MedicareRx. |
|
You have drug coverage from your employer. |
You may be able to enroll in Blue MedicareRx depending on if the plan offered by your employer/union meets or exceeds Medicare Prescription Drug Plan standard benefits (also known as creditable coverage). Please contact your group administrator for more information. |
|
You have Medicaid or coverage from a state pharmacy assistance program. |
You can enroll in Blue MedicareRx now. Find out if you qualify for extra help with monthly premiums and copayments. Or, if you do nothing, you may be randomly assigned to a Medicare-Approved Prescription Drug Plan, instead of selecting the plan that you want. However, you can change plans at any time if you have Medicaid coverage. |
